Apara Ekaadasi on May 20,2009

Dear Members:

Apara Ekadasi falls on the 11th thithi of the dark half of the lunar month Jyeshta (Pournimaath calendar - calculated from Prathama thithi after Full Moon day). The auspicious Apara Ekaadasi falls on May 20, 2009 this year. (It is to be observed on the same date all over the world).

Significance of this Apara Ekaadasi:

This Ekadasi is specifically recommended for those who are suffering from pangs of anxiety rising out of past short-comings in performing one's rightful duties (out of negligence or other pressing practical circumstances). If you have committed some major sins knowingly or unknowingly and are suffering from remorse for those sinful activities, and want to be freed from the psychological pangs now, observance of this Ekadasi will help. This Ekaadasi can free one from sins like Brahmahati (that can cause depressive tendencies and may even lead to more serious psychological disturbances as a consequence of one's sins), Gohatya and other major sins.

Apara Ekaadasi punya is equivalent to all the following meritorious religious activities taken together!....

1) Bathing in the Holy Pushkara thrice a day, everyday throughout the lunar month of Kaarthika;
2) Having Maagha snaana at Holy Prayaag.
3) Performing Seva to Lord Shiva at Vaaranaasi kshetra during shiva Raatri;
4) Gaya shraddam for one's ancestors;
5) Bathing in the Holy Gautami River during Jupiter's transit into Simha rashi;
6) Having Shri Kedaarnaath darshan.
7) Having Badrinaath darshan during the kumba maasa (sun in kumbha raashi)
8) Taking a bath in Kurukshetra during solar eclipse and donating cows, elephants, and gold in charity to worthy Brahmins.
9) Donating a pregnant cow, along with gold and fertile land.

Method of observing Ekaadasi vratham:

Try to limit intake of food slowly starting from the previous day (dasami) itself. Avoid consuming honey, onion, garlic, and such ritually impure items on dasami day (the day before ekaadasi fast) itself and also prepare yourself mentally too by meditating on Lord Hari.

On the day of Ekaadasi fast, you must get up early in the morning, take a bath, and with full intent maintain the fast. Ideally, the fast should be complete - avoiding even drinking water. However, if this is not possible, you may water-down the intensity of the fast like - a fruit-only fast, juice-only fast, milk-only fast, or whatever depending on your health condition. On Ekaadasi day, pulses and grains should be strictly avoided (especially Rice). This Ekaadasi is mandatory for all believers with good health between the ages 7 and 70. (Pregnant women, old aged persons, and ailing persons are exempt these; even women in their monthly periods can fast on ekaadasi and meditate on Lord Hari silently without chanting mantras!)

On the night of Ekaadasi fast, it is recommended to keep a whole night vigil - listening to Lord's wonderful leelaas from various scriptures, or reading Bhagavat Gitaa, or simply chanting Lord's names like Hari, Raam, Krishna, Hare Ramakrishna, etc.

On Dwaadasi - the day after the fast, the fast should be broken within 2 hours 24 mins. after sunrise at your place, at an auspicious time. Those who have maintained a full fast (without even water) can break the fast by just consuming Tulsi teertham (Tulsi-soaked water). Others can break fast by eating fruits.

On Dwaadasi thithi, tamarind and chillies should be avoided while cooking. Lemon can be used instead of Tamarind; pepper can be used instead of chillies to flavour the food-items.

It is good to consume Amla on dwaadasi thithi as this endears one to Lord Krishna.

One who maintains this fast of Apara Ekaadasi will win fame and reknown besides cutting off the roots of all negative karmaas. May all our members undertake this Holy Fast and relieve themselves of all negative karmaas.

Blessed be.

Vishnupati Punyakaalam on May 14, 2009

Dear Members:

The auspicious Vishnupati Punya kaalam falls on May 14, 2009 (this is one of the 4 vishnupati punya kaalams that fall in a year) for major parts of the world including USA, Canada, Carribean Isles, UK, African countries, Gulf Countries, India, China, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, Singapore, etc. For those in Far East countries (Japan, Koreas, etc.) and for those in Australia and New Zealand, the Vishnupati Punya kaalam should be observed on May 15, 2009 [This is as per Brihaspati smriti doctrines that suggest that if Sun's entry happens after 45th ghati, the punya kaalam should be observed on the following day; this condition prevails for Far East countries while calculating the punyakaalam this time].

Dharma shaastra says that any meritorious deed done during periods like Vishnupati Punya kaalam will ensure Divine Protection for the next 7 years. Also, the results of the meritorious deeds (punya) get multiplied 1000 times!

The whole day is auspicious and you may perform special worships or charities at any time from dawn of the date mentioned (14th May or 15th May, 2009 depending on your geographical location) till the sunrise of the next day. So, even those of you who may have busy schedules should make it a point to some how squeeze time to do special prayers/ meditation on this punya kaalam day and become recipients of Divine Grace.

Reciting sthothras like Shri Vishnu Sahasranaamam, Shrimad Bhaagavatam, Shrimad Raamaayanam, Shrimad Bhagavat Geetha, etc. will be very auspicious on this Vishnupati period. Also, it will be auspicious to offer oblations in Honour of Deities, Sages, and ancestors during this Punya kaalam.

The least you can do is to recite "Raama Raama" whenever you get time throughout the day.

Japa, Tapa, HOma, and Dhaana are the limbs of punya, and by performing any of these on Holy Days like these, we can erase the tough writings of Lord Brahma from our foreheads and have our Destiny rewritten favourably by the Golden nib of the Lord. May our members indulge in charitable/ religious deeds on this Holy Day and become recipients of Divine Grace. Divine Grace is the only Wealth that will never get eroded by "recession" or "macro economic factors." May we earn this Wealth of Divine Grace zealously on Holy Days like these and invest in our own bright future (it is punya that gets translated as good luck - sooner or later!).

Om Namah Shivaya

Om NamO Naaraayanaaya

Shri Raam Jaya Raam Jaya Jaya Raam.

Blessed be

Chitra Pournami on May 08, 2009

Dear members:

The auspicious Chitra Pournami vrattam falls on May 08, 2009 this year. For those in India who are performing regular Pournami Pooja every month, the monthly Pournami Pooja should be done on May 08, 2009 night while the Chitra Gupta Pooja should be done on May 09, 2009 morning. The fast for the chitra Pournami should be undertaken on May 08, 2009, and it should be broken after the chitragupta pooja on May 09, 2009 morning. The same applies to countries to those living in Gulf countires, and countries to the east of INdia like China, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

For those in the US and European countries both Chitra Pournami fast and Chitra Gupta Pooja fall on the same day, i.e.on May 08, 2009.

Austerities in connection with Chitrapournami/ chitragupta pooja:

It is customary to eat curd rice (preferably curd of buffalo!) without salt on that day and to fast without eating anything else. In any case, avoiding salt in food items throughout the day is recommended on that day, if possible.

Special worship is done in Honour of Lord ChitraGupta - the Divine Accountant - who keeps an account of our karmas, and appeals for forgiveness for our shortcomings are raised on this day. Those who can afford a visit, should pay a visit to Kanchipuram Chitra Gupta temple -an ancient one which is very ancient and powerful.

In Madurai Meenakshi amman temple, DevEndr Pooja is done on Chitra Pournami day (it is believed that it is on this day Indra came across a Golden Lotus in a pond with which He worshipped Lord Shiva of the temple; the temple tank of Madurai Meenaakshi amman temple is called Golden Lotus tank still). So, paying a visit to Shri Meenaakshi SundarEshwara temple today is also auspicious and can relieve one of the sins such as insult to Gurus (In fact, Indra did the pooja on Chitra Pournami to propitiate Lord Shiva and get remedied from burden of sins that He committed in the absence of His Guru Brihaspati, who was incognito for some period following an argument with Indra).

Chitra Gupta can be easily pleased by uttering the following names:

"Om Chitraaya namah"
"Om Chitraguptaaya namah"
"Om Karma saakshine namah"
"Om nirdoshaaya namah"
"Om Kaarunya roopine namah"
"Om Dharmaraaja parivaarakaaya namah"

While reciting these names, Chitra Gupta should be meditated upon as a short human form attired in traditional Indian attire with a turban, shining ear rings, and having a bunch of palm leaf scrolls and a pen for writing karmic accounts. His consort is Goddess Karnaambikai.
Mantra for praising and saluting Shri Chitragupta

"Chitragupta namastubhyam lEkaaksharadaayakam

LEkanii katinii hasta chitragupta namOastutE"

The day should be spent by giving contributions to charities, doing meritorious deeds as per one's convenience, and spending the day in contemplation and introspection with the firm affirmation to reduce performance of sinful activities in the coming year.

Performance of this Chitra Pournami vrattam is a powerful remedy for afflictions of ketu in the horoscope.
So, those under ketu dasa/ bhukti or those suffering from marital difficulties or delay in progeny caused by affliction of ketu in horoscopes can benefit much by this Chitra Pournami vratta and Chitragupta poojaa.

May our members celebrate this Holy Day and get relief from burden of sins.

Blessed be.

Narasimha Jayanthi on May 7, 2009

Dear Members:

This post is about Shri Narasimha Jayanthi this year which falls on May 7, 2009. (Thursday)

Lord Narasimha is a Ugra Form of Lord Mahaa Vishnu, but His Ugra Form is fearsome only for those who are demonaic in nature and transgress the line of Dharma. For His devotees, He is the Shantha Narasimha - the Graceful Lakshmi Narasimha with Devi Lakshmi seated on His lap and His child Devotee Shri Bhakta Prahlaada worshipping Him.Worship of Lord Narasimha makes a person brave and adventurous. Mere sight of a Narasimha Upaasakaa is enough to drive away most minor goblins, and doshas. The Revered Aachaarya of Sringeri (now of Revered memory) - Shri Ugra Narasimha Bharati was a living example of what siddhi of Narasimha Upaasanaa can confer on a living soul. The mere presence of the Aacharya has driven away disturbing elementals from haunted houses.

For householders who are in the grips of debts, Runa Vimochana Narasimha sthothram is a panacea to the trouble. Chanting it once every day can be an antidote against falling into a debt trap. Those who are already facing severe debt crises, can try chanting it 8 times, 18 times, or 32 times, or even 108 times to get immediate relief during critical periods. This is one of the mantras that can give speedy relief from debts and improvement in financial condition (even if the horoscope indicates disastrous financial prospects for a native, this sthothra can change the Fate).

Another powerful hymn on Shri Narasimha is "Shri Lakshmi Narasimha Karaavalamba sthothram" - requesting His Helping Hand during critical periods. The Sahasranaamam of Shri Lakshmi Narasimhar is a wonderful composition vested with poetic beauty of a Divine degree. You can almost Feel the vibes as you keep chanting certain portions of it.Those who can recite these shothras can do so and become recipients of His Grace. Others may simply chant "Jaya Jaya Simhaa....Jaya Narasimhaa" with devotion as many times as possible. (Paaraayanam group members please note that the Runa Vimochana sthothram is already in our Files section which you may listen to on that day; I will try to upload the file on Shri Narasimha Karaavalambham also if possible). After the recitals, offering of Paanagam (mixture of water, Gur, cardomom) can be placed in the prayer altar which can then be consumed by everyone after the pooja.

Visit to Divya kshetras like Sholingar (called Kadigaachalam), Ahobhilam, Mangalagiri, Mattapalli Narasimhar temple, etc. on this day will be very auspicious.Lord Narasimha is varaprasaadhi. According to one traditional legend, when the demon Hiranyakasipu queried his son Bhakta Prahlaada about Shri Hari's abode, the child replied that He is everywhere. But, even before the child answered thus, Lord Vishnu was so anxious to prove His Devotee as correct that He pervaded the Whole Universe with his tejas so that He can appear at momen't notice wherever the child shows his hands (after the child could have shown any place as per his whim and fancy; the Lord wanted to prove him correct without the least delay!). It is well-known that when Hiranyakasipu pointed at a pillar and asked if Hari is there, Prahlaada boldly said yes. When Hiranyakasipu kicked the pillar, Lord Narasimha manifested immediately and put an end to the demon. It may just be a poetic exaggeration about Lord Vishnu being "anxious" about which place His devotee will show as His abode and from which He should manifest immediately, thereby He pervading the Whole Universe with His tejas....... (afterall the Omniscient Lord need not take special efforts to be everywhere....HE IS ALREADY EVERYWHERE!). The point to be noted about this is that it gives a hint about the "attitude" of this Ugra Narasimha.....He is ever ready to extend a helping hand to His devotees at moment's notice and to grant them boons.

May He with the Lion Face who manifested in a pillar on the expressed confidence of His child Devotee at moment's notice be with us and protect us from all perils - at the very moment when we seek His Assistance.

Blessed be.Pandit R.DAKSHINAMOORTHI

Say not the struggle not availeth!

MANAGEMENT LESSONS FROM SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS – SAY NOT THE STRUGGLE NOT AVAILETH!
Spirituality is not divorced from reality. Contrary to the popular perception that spirituality is some what “different” from mundane reality, spiritual truths often have more relevance even to our mundane activities. I am planning a series of write-ups based on spiritual legends and how those lessons are relevant to us – in our day to day activities and how in some cases, great management techniques are encapsuled in simple folk tales.

Let me begin with this…..
Once there was an ancient Shiva temple in an obscure village. Some great yogi had done tapasya at that place and upon the yogi’s samaadhi, a Shiva Linga had been consecrated, and in later years it has become a Samaadhi mandir. There was an oral tradition to the effect that whosoever pours 1000 pots of pure river water on the Shiva Linga will have vision of the Lord and all desires will be granted. But, as the river was some distance away from the temple, no one actually tried that procedure. But, the oral tradition passed on from one generation to the next and the belief was sustained without being lost in the mists of time.
In that village, there lived a poor and wretched man whom Fate seemed to test in unique ways. Whatever he did seemed to end up in failure due to strong extraneous factors. As the saying goes “Winds blew when he sold flour, and rains poured when he laid a brick kiln; sun blazed when he tried cultivate, and floods came when he tried to harvest.” He was looking for ways to improve his fortune and almost all astrologers whom he consulted said the same “Your horoscope has hard luck, and all your efforts are doomed to failure; you need powerful remedies to overcome this effect – but we normal astrologers are powerless to suggest such a remedy to you.”
The poor man was living a heart-broken existence and was anxiously waiting for some good turn of luck for him.Once, a great yogi visited the village. This poor man tended to the needs of the yogi and rendered all possible assistance to the yogi’s pooja and occult routines. The yogi was most pleased with the man and told him “My son! I am pleased with your attitude of service. By Divine Intuition I am able to realize your problems. All those problems are due to the 1000 major sins that you have accumulated in various previous births. Now, if you pour 1000 pots of pure river water on the Shiva Linga of this village-temple with full faith and reverence, by the Grace of Lord Shiva, your Fate will be altered positively for ever, and you will attain Salvation at the end of this birth.”
Then, the yogi went on his way as is usual for such people (they are like the air – they keep moving from place to place bringing in their soothing influence wherever they visit). The poor man felt motivated by the yogi’s words and blessings. The very next day after the yogi’s departure, he decided to try out the 1000 pot abhisheka remedy. He began early in the morning and was doing it with full faith initially. After the 100th pot, he expected some development – but alas! Nothing….he was only getting slightly tired….200th pot…300th pot…and so on….When the 500th pot was over, the man started getting doubts about whether this remedy will really work. But, still memory of the smiling face of the yogi and his confident assertion motivated him to continue, nevertheless. He plodded on and on till the 900th pot. Still nothing seemed to be moving. His limbs ached, his head seemed to spin out of exhaustion, stars seemed to fly before his eyes……Still he plodded on and on….thinking I have come this far – let me continue and see what happens……999th pot was over. STILL NO CHANGE.
He had to really motivate himself and push himself very hard to try bringing the 1000th pot. He brought it up near the Shiva Linga – but – at this moment, his anger got the better of him………….Instead of pouring the pot reverentially on the Linga, he dashed the pot with its contents on the Linga saying “You heartless Stone! You never moved even after all this!” The Linga broke into pieces…. Lo! Lord Shiva Himself Manifested from the Linga at that very moment – but said “Oh Unfortunate Man! What have you done? Did not the yogi ask you to do the deed with “full faith and reverence”? Your bad attitude at the last moment has spoilt the remedy.”The man cursed his Fate and lay down in exhaustion. Alas! All his strenuous efforts have been in vain – just because he lost his cool at the crucial moment! Thus ends the legend.

Now, there is lesson in this for all of us.
Most of us do work hard to attain our goals. But, often we spoil our own efforts by our “inappropriate attitude” during crucial times; and then we see our hard efforts going down the drain – just like the poor man in this story. Unconditional patience and perseverance TILL THE GOAL IS REACHED are required for success. It does not matter that we took million steps towards our goal – if we trip down at the last step before crossing the finish line.It is easy to lose motivation when the going seems tough; it is easy to lose focus at work when we seem to receive no appreciation for our sincerity; it is easy to lose patience if the demands at work seem unending. BUT, it is in our own interest to keep our cool and keep plodding as best as we can, without showing out our frustration (natural though it is!). The powers that be, might be noticing you – without you realizing it. Just as the Divine Force in that Sacred Linga of this story was waiting for the 1000th pot to be completed before giving the boon, your superiors at work might be waiting for some crucial landmark – which of course you may not know – before deciding to reward you.
I have seen many unfortunate cases where clients have lost patience and changed jobs just at the moment when the tide changes and there is possibility of the current organization itself might have rewarded them with pay-increase or promotion.Let this legend be a lesson to all of us who feel that our efforts are unrewarded and nothing seems to move. The truth is “things definitely keep moving when we take efforts; but most of the time, the movement is so subtle till the actual moment of reckoning arrives. Most of us lose our motivation and focus at the last moment and change track thereby losing the good script that we have been working on so well and so long!”
Remember “Patience is always rewarding, and it is patience that is the catalyst that turns your sweat and blood into sweet rewards and success; without patience, your hard efforts and sacrifices may go down the drain.” If you are about to change a job just because you seem to think that you are not getting enough chances to improve here….think for a moment more seriously and patiently……are you sure that there is no scope for improvement here? Are you being objective in your assessment of the situation? If you are sure that your decision is based on objective criteria, then, yes, you may change jobs after consulting an intelligent astrologer (or a good well-wisher of yours in your field). Sometimes, our anger and frustration at not getting things move at a pace we love, impel us towards change – without considering the consequences…then we start again from the scratch in a new organization, and in some cases, the same cycle repeats (that of losing the script at the last moment and changing jobs!). Probably a little more patience could have made a lot of difference to our life!
